Natalie Lyon ’25, a civil engineering major, will join CDM Smith in Boston as a structural engineer, focusing on the design and analysis of bridges, tunnels and retaining walls.

Lyon credits her time at Quinnipiac, both in the classroom and on the soccer field, for shaping her work ethic and preparing her for success.

“Being a student-athlete made work ethic second nature,” said Lyon. “Since I was young, I’ve always known how to balance a busy schedule. This included staying on top of schoolwork and attending soccer practices, games, tournaments and more.”

She landed her job after interning at CDM Smith last summer, a position she secured through networking. She believes Quinnipiac’s engineering program set her apart.

“We have learned to use software — like AutoCAD, Risa3D, even Excel — which sets us apart from other universities, and prepares us for internships and other real-life experiences.”

Lyon also credits Director of Civil Engineering John Greenleaf and Associate Professor Priscilla Fonseca for their guidance throughout her academic journey. She also acknowledges Assistant Dean for Student Experience and Career Development John Bau for his support in helping students secure jobs, along with other faculty members who have played a role in her success at Quinnipiac.

As she begins her career, Lyon is eager to make an impact.

“I am excited to live in a new city where I can improve both local and national infrastructure to better the safety and welfare of others,” Lyon said. “I am excited to make a difference and apply the knowledge I have learned here at Quinnipiac while continuing to learn so much more.”

Her advice to students hoping to follow the same path is to attend class, listen to professors, take the FE exam before graduation, and gain as much internship experience as possible.
