The scholarship is designed to encourage upper-level journalism students to pursue a career that explores the intersection of money and power. Quinnipiac trustees endowed the scholarship in memory of Alan Abelson, who wrote the influential “Up and Down Wall Street” column in Barron’s magazine for decades. With razor wit, he called out investment fads, questioned market wisdom and uncovered fraud in public companies.
"I'm thrilled to be the recipient of this year's Abelson Scholarship,” Levasseur said. “I'm excited to explore the influence of money in my work during my final semester at Quinnipiac this spring."
Levasseur is the former sports editor of the on-campus student-run newspaper, The Quinnipiac Chronicle. He is a six-time Connecticut Society of Professional Journalists college contest award winner and a New England Newspaper Association college division award winner. He also is a two-time winner of Quinnipiac’s Quilitzer Prize for Sports Reporting.
"The scholarship recognizes Cameron's understanding of the business side of sports in an era of collegiate athlete compensation and billion-dollar professional sports teams,” said Rich Hanley, professor emeritus of journalism and the founding member of the Abelson Scholarship Committee.
“His talent and hard work combine to bring insightful perspectives to his academic and professional-grade work as a student journalist.”
A $500 FAFSA Incentive Grant will be applied to the financial aid offer of admitted first-year students who complete the FAFSA by January 15, 2025.
