Alexa Binkowitz JD '23 transformed a time of grief into momentum that propelled her to dedicate her life to fighting for others.

Although pursuing a legal career was always in the back of her mind, a devastating family loss pivoted her toward Quinnipiac Law.

“It’s probably weird to say that grief got me to where I am right now, but that’s the best way for me to describe the journey thus far," she said. "I’m still inspired by that grief, but I’ve channeled it in a way that makes me want to move forward way more than I used to.”

After completing her master's in 2019 at another university, Binkowitz enrolled at the Quinnipiac School of Law.

While being a law student, Binkowitz accomplished a lot, including becoming editor in chief for Quinnipiac’s Health Law Journal, helping organize a symposium on cognitive testing for doctors over 65, and earning the Dean of Students Award.

“Quinnipiac has prepared me for a successful legal career because I truly believe that I was exposed to people with all different kinds of working styles, which is essential in a workplace environment," she said. "I have great respect for other peoples’ ideas, opinions and values, which is something Quinnipiac has supported and fostered in the classroom and socially. I didn’t come to law school with any kind of legal background, nor did I really know what direction I wanted my career to go in, but I found that I was able to find my own path over these last three years here."

Binkowitz’s leadership led the Health Law Journal to be recognized as the Student Organization of the Year by the Student Bar Association this year.

Binkowitz and her team's hard work makes her extremely proud.

“There’s a really deep feeling of accomplishment and pride in seeing something you worked on come out in print. I wouldn’t be the person I am right now without the journal and all the people who worked on it with me — they’re the absolute best and some of my closest friends in the world. I am the luckiest person to have had their trust and support thus far,” Binkowitz said.

Binkowitz encourages incoming law students to find their people.

“Law school can be a tumultuous and daunting experience, and it truly makes all the difference to have people around you that soften the blow of it all," she said. "The people that I have met here at QU Law are some of the most brilliant and wonderful individuals. I know for sure that regardless of whatever direction I may go in, I’ll always have those bonds to fall back on.”

She adds “Set your own path, trust the journey and take your time. Enjoy the moment because it flies by faster than you’d imagine.”
