Parents and Families Update: April 2024
Prepping for Commencement
April 26, 2024
April 26, 2024
By Tom Ellett
Chief Experience Officer
Welcome to spring! We are preparing campus for the annual kick-off of Commencement activities, including time to honor and recognize the accomplishments of those students graduating from Quinnipiac. It is a special time to ensure the thanks, congratulations and “we will miss you” endearments are expressed to the Class of 2024.
There are a significant number of year-end activities occurring each day. My calendar is booked with student events from a variety of clubs and organizations that are honoring those who have given back to our community this academic year. As I always say to students, “120 weeks of college (for traditional four-year students) goes very quickly! Be sure to attend programs, engage with peers and leave your legacy”; and it is extremely rewarding to see that happen so often at Quinnipiac. Be proud of the impact your student has made during their college career, it will help them in the next phase of the journey.
I want to take a moment to thank the 14 parents on the advisory board that I meet with each month. They are an excellent source of feedback and ideas through the eyes of our students. This year we have had numerous guest speakers and discussed a variety of topics. I am personally grateful for their time and looking forward to continuing the discussion next semester.
Please note in this issue, updates for returning students, the FAFSA process (everyone’s challenge these days), Commencement details, office updates and other important information will be covered.
Wishing you a relaxing summer and the opportunity to spend some quality time with your students.

Greetings from the Office of Housing! We sent hall closing information to all residential students on April 22, and we want to share an overview with you as well. Your student has additional details in the email message. Best wishes as you and your student develop their summer plans. We hope everyone has a productive and enjoyable summer!
All residence halls close on Saturday, May 11 at 10 a.m., and residents must move out according to the below schedule.
Designated Move-Out Days:
Students who do not have final exams and are not registered for summer housing must move out by Saturday, May 4 at 10 a.m.
Students who are not graduating and are not registered for summer housing must move out within 24 hours after their last exam, but no later than Saturday, May 11 at 10 a.m., whichever comes first.
Students who are graduating and who will be participating in Commencement must move out by noon on the day after their ceremony.
Students who are registered for summer housing are permitted to stay on campus until the summer term begins, and they should be prepared to move to their summer housing assignment on Friday, May 17.
Students who live on the Mount Carmel Campus and are leaving on Saturday, May 11 should be mindful that Commencement begins promptly at 10 a.m. on the Quad and will continue throughout the day. We encourage everyone to plan accordingly and depart campus as early as possible to avoid parking and traffic delays.
We ask your student to fill out our online Check-Out Form on MyHousing when they leave campus.
Students who want to move out of their residence hall after 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 11 must fill out a May Late Departure Request form, which is also available on MyHousing. Requests will be approved in limited circumstances only. The deadline for requesting a late departure is Sunday, May 5. Requests received after May 5 will incur a $50 service fee.
Approved Late-Stay Reasons
Students who need to stay locally in order to fulfill an academic commitment such as student teaching, clinicals, or university-sponsored internships and research with prior approval from their professor or academic department
In-season student-athletes with prior approval from their coach
Students who are assisting during Commencement
Students who are participating in another university-sponsored activity with prior approval from the responsible university official
Other - Any student requesting to stay on campus after their designated move-out day, and for whom the above four reasons do not apply, will be charged a minimum late move-out fee of $100, if approved. Additional nightly charges will apply if students remain on campus for multiple days after hall closing.
All dining services locations, including the Mount Carmel Dining Hall, will close by Friday, May 10 at 7 p.m.
Visitors are not permitted during the final exam period beginning Friday, May 3 at 6 p.m. Visitor registration will be closed.
If your student rented a microfridge, they should empty, unplug, and leave the door to the unit open when they move-out. The company will pick up rented units after closing.
As stated in the Quinnipiac handbook, your student and their roommates share a room equally. Damages that occur in their room are billed to all roommates unless only one is clearly responsible. If your student caused any damage, they should accept responsibility by contacting their Residence Hall Director.
As stated in the Quinnipiac handbook, "In cases where damage or vandalism is done to common areas, and the student(s) who are responsible cannot be determined, students sharing that common area share in the cost of the restitution." Students should refer to their student account for any damage billing that may have occurred. Questions can be directed to their Residence Hall Director.
Your student is invited to donate excess or unwanted non-perishable food items left over at the end of the year. The Office of Community Service will collect and donate them to local community organizations in need.
While moving out of their residence hall, students and families are welcome to park in the loading/unloading zones close to the building. There will be a strict 20-minute time limit for vehicles in the loading zones to ensure a smooth move-out process for all students. Please plan accordingly.
Storage is not available on campus. Any personal belongings that are not removed during move-out will be discarded and may result in a service fee. If necessary, students can ship items home or arrange for off-campus summer storage before the end of the semester.
If you have any questions concerning closing procedures or move-out, please ask your student to contact their Residence Hall Director. We wish everyone the best of luck on their final exams and hope they have a great summer!
Several students and families provided valuable feedback after the sophomore and junior housing selection processes ended. Thank you! The process worked successfully as designed, but we acknowledge that not everyone achieved their ideal room assignment for the 2024-25 academic year. A few years ago, based on student feedback, we began allowing roommate pairs to select individual double rooms rather than requiring students to fill whole apartments. The feedback on this change has been mostly positive because it eliminated the need for students to find whole groups of roommates to participate in the selection process, which was stressful for many folks.
Our philosophy has been to maximize the opportunities for students to select their direct roommate in a suite or apartment that they find appealing. However, this approach meant that some larger groups who selected later in the process had to break up into pairs to select an open double room in a partially filled suite. Although we recognize that breaking up the group may not have been easy, we are pleased to announce that 95.6% of students who had a direct roommate request are in fact assigned with that one person for next year. As always, we will consider making changes for next year. Thank you again for the feedback.

Quinnipiac Dining has had an exciting month of April so far, and there’s still more to come! We have hosted two DIY events: first was DIY salsa at the North Haven Dining Hall, and we also did DIY Cookie Jar at the York Hill Dining Hall. We had some great station takeovers, too! At the Bobcat Den, we did a SONO station takeover for a week with some tasty street taco options. We also hosted Thoughtful, our second joyful event of the semester. Thoughtful involved events at all campuses, the Bobcat Den hosted an ice cream social, York Hill had a delicious hydration station with infused waters, the Mount Carmel Dining Hall offered clarity shots and a menu takeover, North Haven offered a specialty pizza, and we hosted the main event at the Health and Wellness Fair with healthy snacks and fun giveaways. The rest of the month we’re highlighting Earth Month with an Earth Day sustainable Teaching Kitchen in partnership with Students for Environmental Action Group, and we’re hosting a farmers' market at the Earth Day Fair! We’re also finishing out the semester offering bulk order purchasing for students with extra meal points at the end of the semester.
As we are coming to the close of the academic year, students should be especially mindful of their meal points. All students are encouraged to check their meal points at least once a week by installing the Transact app on their mobile device or accessing the Transact website. Comparing the actual meal point balance to the week-by-week guidelines will help students to stay on track.
Any leftover meal points will roll over from the fall to the spring semester. However, spring semester points will expire if they are not used at the end of the term.
Students with too many points have three options available to them:
Consider transferring points to another student
Participate in the Tap Out Hunger program and donate meal points to charity. Log into MyQ to complete the Tap Out Hunger form
Purchase food or beverages in bulk quantities directly from the dining hall to bring home. Dining services offers limited items based on cost value at the end of each year. There is a sign-up process announced in April and pick ups take place in the final weeks of the semester. Complete a bulk order purchasing form
Students who have fewer points than the budget recommends can negotiate a transfer of points from another student.
If a student runs out of meal points, they can supplement with Q-Cash. The dining facilities accept Q-Cash and credit cards. Q-Cash acts as a debit account separate from the student's meal plan, and students may add Q-Cash to their account at any time by making a deposit on the Transact page. Parents and guardians can also make guest deposits. In addition to each dining location on our three campuses, Q-Cash is accepted at numerous establishments in the surrounding area.

What an amazing year it has been in the FSL community — we've already raised more than $125,000 for philanthropic causes and performed more than 6,800 hours of hands-on service!
We wrapped up our 10th annual Greek Week which included our signature events such as lip sync, FSL’s Got Talent, and a Step, Stroll, Salute Showcase — though there will be many more events throughout the week! Congratulations to all who participated!
We hosted FSL awards on April 16 and offered several awards at the individual, organization and council level. Congratulations to our winners! We look forward to announcing our Fraternity of the Year, Sorority of the Year, Fraternity Member of the Year, and Sorority Member of the Year at Undergraduate Awards on April 29.
If your Bobcat wants to find their home away from home, establish a community of peers with similar values, participate in service/philanthropy events, and have fun, feel free to direct them our way for information about joining. There’s so much coming up in the fraternity and sorority community; if your Bobcat is interested in joining us, please don’t hesitate to reach out. Shalom to all,
The Hereld House student community is thriving! Every Friday for Shabbat between 18-25 students gather together to light shabbat candles and share in saying the brachot. Many students are going home for first seder Pessach and over 20 students will come to my home and we will craft and create a seder together. For many years my husband and I have hosted first seder – but never have we had so many students join us. Hopefully well get a great picture!
Public Safety has added security features to and around the Hereld House, which includes electronic surveillance.
Please know that even in challenging times – your children are being supportive and kind to their fellows and friends at the Hereld House. Wherever you are and whoever you are with, May Pessach bring you Hope and Shalom.
With much best,
Rabbi Reena
The Office of Global Engagement has moved! We will now be in the Arnold Bernhard Library, suite ABSL-111. Students will enter the suite via ABLS-121, across from One Stop.
As many of you are now aware, the Department of Education instituted a significant overhaul to the 2024-2025 FAFSA application and process. This reimplementation was due to the FAFSA Simplification Act, which passed on Dec. 27, 2020 as part of the Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2021. This overhaul of federal student aid included changes to the FAFSA form, need analysis, and many policies and procedures that govern Title IV programs.
Please see the following questions and answers for more information on when your student will receive their aid package for fall 24 and what to expect after the reimplementation of the FAFSA:
When should I complete the FAFSA?
Returning students should complete the FAFSA now if they have not yet done so. This will allow for ample time for your FAFSA to be sent to Quinnipiac but also, if there are any issues with the data or calculation, if gives you and the Department of Education time to resolve the issues before we start packaging offer letters for fall 24.
When will you start packaging financial aid offer letters for fall 24/spring 25?
For returning undergraduate students – Late May/early June
We will start creating financial aid award offers for returning students after the spring semester has ended and grades have been posted. We are required to review Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) annually and will complete this review prior to creating award offers for returning students. In the meanwhile, please make sure:
Your student has completed the 24-25 FAFSA with Quinnipiac’s school code (001402).
There are no issues or corrections that need to be resolved on your student’s FAFSA (log into studentaid.gov and look for ‘action required’).
For incoming undergraduate students: We have begun the process of creating offer letters based on the FAFSA data.
If you have not yet received an offer letter (email sent to your student’s email address – paper letter to follow shortly), please confirm:
That you entered Quinnipiac’s school code on the FAFSA (001402)
That your SSN is on file in your applicant portal (we need your SSN to link your FAFSA to your application)
That there are no issues or corrections that need to be resolved on your student’s FAFSA (log into studentaid.gov and look for ‘action required’).
If there are no issues, please contact the Office of Financial Aid at 203-582-8750 or finaid@qu.edu.
What is SAI (Student Aid Index)?
Student Aid Index (SAI) – Formerly known as Expected Family Contribution (EFC):
The Student Aid Index (SAI) is an eligibility index number that the financial aid office uses to determine how much federal student aid a student could receive. This number results from the information that a student provides on their FAFSA. This number is not a dollar amount of aid eligibility or what a student’s family is expected to provide. A negative SAI indicates the student has a higher financial need.
Why is my student’s 2024-25 SAI different from their 2023-24 EFC? And what does this mean?
Because of the FAFSA reimplementation, which also included a change to the need-analysis calculation used, your SAI may be higher, or lower, than your EFC from previous years. Since this calculation is determined by the Department of Education, we are required to use this year’s SAI to determine your financial aid eligibility. For some families, this may result in additional financial aid compared to previous years, less financial aid then previous years, or you will see no change to your financial aid award offers compared to previous years. If you have any questions after your student receives their 24-25 financial aid award offer, please contact the Office of Financial Aid at 203-582-8750 or finaid@qu.edu.
My student received communication from either the Department of Education or Quinnipiac that their FAFSA was rejected. What should we do from here?
Please have your student log into studentaid.gov and look for ‘action require’ to review the issue or error and make the appropriate corrections. Please do so as soon as you can to allow ample time for the Department of Education to process the corrections before we start preparing financial aid award offers.
When should my student apply for a private loan or when should we apply for a Parent PLUS or private parent Loan for Fall 2024/Spring 2025?
Please apply in mid-May.

Invoices for the summer terms have been released and payment is due by May 15.
Invoices for fall will be released according to the schedule below:
Undergraduate and graduate students’ invoices will be released on June 14 and payment is due July 12.
Law students’ invoices will be released on July 1, and payment is due July 31.
Invoices for medical students in years 1 and 2 will be released on June 14, and payment is due July 12.
Invoices for medical students in years 3 and 4 have been released and payment is due on May 15.
For full details, including payment plan installment dates, please visit the Payment Options page of our website.
Payment plans are only offered in the fall and the spring. When students or proxies sign up for a payment plan by the payment due date, installments are spread over five months.
We offer two types of payment plans:
Auto Adjust – this plan covers the student’s full balance due and will automatically adjust if the amount owed changes. Therefore, if financial aid is applied the balance due on the payment plan will automatically adjust. This adjustment can lead to an increase or decrease of the monthly payment plan. The remaining balance due will be split among the remaining payments.
Fixed Balance – this plan allows the student to determine the amount to pay via the payment plan. To make any adjustments to the amount after the first payment is due, the student needs to contact the One Stop office.
At the conclusion of the add/drop registration period, students may owe a balance or be due a refund. It can take up to two weeks after add/drop for refunds to be processed. The fastest way to get a refund is to sign up for direct deposit.
In Self-Service students and proxies will be asked to consent to the statement of financial responsibility which includes QU’s withdrawal and refund policy. When students or proxies view the invoice through Self-Service and continue to Make a Payment the consent form will be presented.
Students will also be offered the opportunity to purchase tuition insurance.
Students may authorize a proxy (parent, guardian, spouse or other individual) to have access to Self-Service to make payments on behalf of the student or to view grades. In addition, authorizing a proxy also allows the appropriate Quinnipiac faculty and staff to discuss relevant matters with the proxy. Learn more about Proxy Access.
Self-Service Student Finance Guide provides complete instructions on using Self-Service to set up a proxy, view and pay invoices and set up a payment plan.
Managing Student Finances pages show cost of attendance and financial aid options.

Commencement information can be found on the Commencement site. Students should verify their anticipated date of completion at their Stellic account. If dates need to be adjusted, please email registrar@qu.edu.
Quinnipiac has introduced Stellic, a tool designed to help students seamlessly track academic progress.
"We’re focused on minimizing perceived barriers, so organizing technological efficiencies for students is a priority,” said Thomas Ellett, chief experience officer. "We’re looking to make it as easy as possible for students to understand where they stand in their academic journey.”
Provost Debra Liebowitz praised the system for its ease.
“There were other systems out there, but I knew Stellic could really facilitate better communication between students and advisers,” she said. “It allows for student-directed communication and for them to see their path.”
The tool has enhances the collaboration between students and advisers.
“We’re proud at this point that Stellic not just helps students, but helps so many other people on campus to help students too,” said Amy Terry, university registrar. “Down the road, we’re looking forward to all the options that Stellic can offer students – which include exploring how registration can be used in Stellic to put all the tools and information that students need for degree progress into one place.”
The parking rules and regulations will continue to be enforced this semester. This means that first-year students may not bring their vehicle to campus for the spring term.
Learn more about parking, including rules and regulations
Any new students enrolling in the summer terms must apply for a parking permit.

All student parking permits expire on August 31. Students should look for an email over the summer with links to updated rules and regulations and instructions for how to apply for permits for the 2024-25 academic year.
Your graduate has been busy preparing for their ceremony by attending #adulting workshops, the Commencement Fair and Class Toast.
All graduates who pre-ordered their cap and gown were able to pick it up at the Commencement Fair. If they did not pre-order and/or did not pick up their cap and gown, not to worry! They can still get their regalia by going to the Mount Carmel Bookstore. If they are not on campus, they can call the Bookstore at 203-582-8640 to arrange for their cap and gown to be shipped to them for a small shipping fee.
All eligible graduates also received the link to obtain their Commencement tickets. All guests attending the ceremonies must have a ticket. It can be either printed clearly or shown on a digital device. The Quad will open 90 minutes prior to each ceremony and all seating is outdoors, uncovered, on a flat grassy surface.
Anyone needing assistance with seating is asked to alert a Commencement staff member upon arrival.
Parking will be on the Mount Carmel Campus and parking staff will be on hand to direct you as you approach the campus. Anyone needed accessible parking should alert the parking staff upon arrival.
Ceremonies will be held rain or shine on the Mount Carmel Campus Quad and will run approximately 2-2.5 hours in length. All ceremonies will also be livestreamed and recorded.
