Quinnipiac University in Washington, D.C. program (QU in DC) student Alan McNeely '26 witnessed history as he stood outside of the U.S. Capitol building during the 60th Presidential Inaugural Ceremony.

McNeely, a double major in political science and journalism with a minor in history, earned the opportunity to observe a historic transfer of power by attending President Donald Trump's second inauguration on Monday, January 20.

Upon completion of the QU in DC program, McNeely chose to remain in the nation's capital to attend the ceremony. Due to weather conditions and security concerns, McNeely was limited to experiencing his first presidential inauguration by standing outside of the U.S. Capitol.

"To be in the city where the transfer of power happened in a peaceful orderly manner is something I’m going to remember for the rest of my life and seeing history unfold as the Biden administration ends," said McNeely. "The second Trump administration beginning is a unique feeling. While it's unfortunate to not see the speech in person at the Capitol Rotunda or at the National Mall, I was outside of the Capitol building when it happened and being so close to major American history is something worth bragging about."

As he returns to Quinnipiac to continue his education, McNeely said he is grateful for the unparalleled experiences and education he earned at QU in DC.

"My education at Quinnipiac prepared me for the inauguration in many ways such as being able to adapt on the fly to new circumstances and being able to endure when everything felt impossible," he said. "I’m grateful for the experience that QU in DC has given me and I hope to return to Quinnipiac as a more intelligent and wiser individual."
