Tim Malloy speaks at a podium

Author James Patterson and Quinnipiac Polling Analyst Timothy Malloy have co-authored “American Heroes,” which features a series of profiles in courage from recipients of the three most significant military awards.

Inspired by a great respect and familial connection to the armed forces, Malloy has spent his time working as an analyst for the Quinnipiac Poll and as an on-air reporter, making 14 trips to cover the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq as an embedded reporter after September 11, 2001.

Patterson, a neighbor and friend to Malloy in Palm Beach, Florida has worked with Malloy on different projects before coming together to write “American Heroes.” Before they were co-authors, Patterson hosted and narrated Malloy’s documentary, which focused on the poor and underserved communities along Lake Okeechobee in Florida. They then worked on a book titled “Filthy Rich,” which focused on Jeffrey Epstein, later becoming a New York Times bestseller and Netflix documentary of the same name.

Since their earlier collaborations, the pair have continued to work on other non-fiction projects.

“So, suffice to say it is a fast-paced and exhilarating experience. He has a tremendous imagination, and he is a gifted storyteller, but he listens. He’s a student of people and never stops grinding and learning,” said Malloy.

In their upcoming book “American Heroes,” Patterson’s writing partner, Sgt. Matt Eversmann interviewed recipients of the three most significant military awards, The Medal of Honor, The Silver Star and the Distinguished Service Cross. Eversmann was one of the leaders of the "Black Hawk Down" mission.

“The stories are real, the soldiers, sailors' airmen and Marines all performed acts of heroism under fire. None of them consider themselves heroes,” said Malloy.

Included in the profiles is former Quinnipiac Board Chairman Arthur Rice ’73, who earned The Distinguished Flying Cross after serving as a helicopter pilot during the Vietnam war. During his service, Rice was fired on and ultimately lost his leg in combat.

After his service, Rice graduated from Quinnipiac before going on to study and practice law in Florida.

“I went to Afghanistan into the war theater with him a few years ago and he was received warmly and with great respect by young Army chopper pilots who had learned he was coming,” said Malloy “He was as fearless boarding the Blackhawk helicopter to fly over Taliban territory as he no doubt was nearly sixty years ago."

Readers of the book can expect to read raw and detailed accounts of stories of courage and sacrifice.

“You walk away wondering if you, in the same position, would have the fortitude to risk it all under fire, to save lives, to take lives to absorb terrible injury,” said Malloy.

“American Heroes” is now out. As an analyst for the Quinnipiac Poll, Malloy is confident that the book will resonate with readers during this election season.

“The rationale for this book at this juncture is simple. We need leaders. We need to come together. We need to be a team,” said Malloy. “We need to be willing to sacrifice and comfort and help others. Every one of the service members we interviewed exhibited loyalty and love for those around them at a harrowing time in their lives. They should be our role models."
