Dear future Quinnipiac first-year and transfer student:

Congratulations on your commitment to Quinnipiac! This is a significant milestone, and you should be proud of yourself for making it this far. I know you're probably feeling a mixture of excitement and anxiety about this new chapter in your life. It's perfectly normal to have those feelings, and you're definitely not alone.

As you prepare for your arrival to Quinnipiac, here are some tips and strategies to help you make the most of your summer and feel more confident about the journey ahead:

  1. Plan ahead: Get organized with a planner or digital calendar to keep track of important dates, assignments, and events.

  2. For residential students, once you receive your housing assignment, connect with your roommate(s): Reach out to your roommate(s) in advance to establish communication and discuss shared living arrangements. (This should happen by August 1.)

  3. Pack early: Make a packing list and start gathering your essentials ahead of time to avoid last-minute stress.

  4. Practice self-care: Engage in activities that help you relax, such as reading, exercising or spending time with loved ones -- and read the article in this Bobcat Bound on stress reduction/wellness at Quinnipiac.

  5. Stay informed: Read the weekly Bobcat Bound (like you are now!) which shares Quinnipiac’s resources, such as academic support, counseling services and extracurricular opportunities. Be sure to also keep an eye on the events calendar.

  6. Set realistic goals: Establish achievable academic and personal goals for your first semester to stay motivated and focused.

  7. Learn basic skills: Get comfortable with basic life skills like laundry and budgeting.

  8. Build a support network: Stay connected with family and friends from home while also making an effort to meet new people and form friendships once you arrive.

  9. Keep an open mind: Be open to new experiences and challenges. Remember, it’s OK to step out of your comfort zone.

  10. Breathe: Practice deep breathing or mindfulness techniques to manage anxiety and stay calm.

  11. Seek help: Don’t hesitate to reach out to your Orientation Leader, academic coach/specialist, adviser or support groups if you’re feeling overwhelmed.

Remember, it's OK to feel nervous about starting college. Embrace the excitement and know that you're about to embark on an incredible journey filled with new experiences and opportunities as a part of Bobcat Nation. You've got this!

Wishing you all the best for a fantastic summer and an amazing transition to Quinnipiac!
