Quinnipiac has launched a new partnership with Handshake, an innovative digital platform designed to connect college students with jobs and internships.

The platform will enable students to connect, receive customized job recommendations, meet with employers to learn about company culture and career opportunities and apply in just a couple of clicks. Throughout the process, the university’s career advisers will work with the students to maximize opportunities.

“Handshake has a tremendous employer base and is the college-recruiting platform of choice for larger employers,” said Dave Bouton, assistant director of career development in the School of Business. “There are more than 850,000 employers using the platform, and nearly all of the Fortune 500 companies use the tool for recruiting. As such, it greatly increases the quality and quantity of opportunities our students are exposed to via a Quinnipiac platform.”

Handshake uses strong matching algorithms to align jobs, internships and opportunities to the interests and fields given in a student’s profile, so it does a good job tailoring relevant opportunities to the student’s accounts, Bouton added. The tool takes much of the guessing out of the search process.

“In addition to the huge boost to our base of employers, Handshake provides a streamlined and easy-to-use source for students to access career-related resources, career fairs and professional development events — both internal and external — and schedule career-coaching meetings with our staff,” Bouton said. “Handshake has strong built in communication and event management features that allow our career staff to do things like send highly targeted emails or track attendance at workshops. We also use this to track all our internship and placement data, so it is helpful in improving internship for credit workflow and tracking for students and staff. In effect, it acts as a career themed CRM system for us, so we can monitor student appointments, trends, and attendance at events.”

As a platform, Handshake does an excellent job streamlining the job and internship search process and it makes career related resources easy for students to capitalize on, he added.

“Students can also research employers on Handshake,” Bouton said. “In addition to reading whatever content the employers decide to share, any Handshake user can leave employer and internship reviews, similar to Glassdoor, and they can even leave reviews and details about the interview and hiring process. Talk about a cheat sheet!”

“This summer I had a great experience as an intern for People Are Culture. Utilizing Handshake allowed me to find this opportunity and gain experience in the advertising field,” said Anthony Speciale ‘24. “I had the opportunity to work one-on-one with the company’s founder. Her knowledge and insight was invaluable.”
