Donations are being accepted between through October 15 in the Office of International Students and Scholars at ABL-S122, with items such as winter jackets, fleeces, sweatshirts, sweatpants, sweaters, winter hats, gloves and scarves being especially sought. There are also bins in the lobbies of the School of Law and Frank H. Netter MD School of Medicine.
Sarah Driscoll, director of international student services, said that members of the university community contributed more than 250 pieces of clothing last year, which helped more than 50 international students.
“From the moment that students first arrive in the U.S. (many of them for the first time), we want them to feel welcome and valued,” says Driscoll. “We want our international community to have the support and resources they need to thrive throughout their education and personal journey at Quinnipiac and beyond. The Office of International Students and Scholars winter closet is not only environmentally sustainable, but it also generates the feeling for our international community to feel that Quinnipiac really cares about them and their well-being.”
Kikelomo Adetula, MBA '25, works with Driscoll, in efforts to organize donations, spread awareness of the initiative, and connect with staff, faculty and students.
Adetula explains how this initiative has opened her eyes to the power of collective action, and how selfless actions can result in impactful change.
“Being part of this initiative has deepened my appreciation for the generosity of the Quinnipiac community. I’ve witnessed people coming together to give what they can without expecting anything in return, purely to support others,” says Adetula. “It’s made me realize how powerful collective efforts can be and how a small act of kindness can have a lasting impact."
"This experience has reinforced my belief in the importance of community and how vital it is to extend a helping hand whenever possible," Adetula said.
As an international student herself, Adetula felt inspired to get involved on campus and more importantly in this initiative.
“I understand firsthand the challenges of adjusting to life in a new country, particularly in a place with a different climate,” says Adetula. “When I first arrived, the cost of winter clothing was a concern, and I knew other international students faced the same issue. Being able to ease that burden for others and provide them with the warmth they need was the main motivation behind my involvement. It's about helping others feel more at home and cared for in a new environment,” she added.
