In today’s high-tech yet hands-on world, careers in the health sciences are more important than ever. Whether it’s developing a vaccine to neutralize a global pandemic, helping a patient learn to use a prosthetic device, screening a woman’s breast health with a mammogram or treating an infant with a stubborn fever, the need for thoughtful, well-educated professionals is clear. The School of Health Sciences prepares our students for these dynamic and fulfilling roles as clinicians, rehabilitation specialists, imaging professionals and scientists.

Your Experience

As a student in the School of Health Sciences, you can see the future — your future — right now. Our classes are purposefully designed so you can investigate and experiment, especially with our explorer major, Health Science Studies.

The interdisciplinary design of the Health Science Studies program emphasizes patient-centered care with a science-based focus on wellness, health and fitness. With the addition of two new tracks in Fall 2022, students can choose from: exercise and wellness, human movement, sports medicine, clinical preparation, and health and science. A sixth track, Physician Assistant Prep, is by invitation only.

Our cutting-edge facilities in the School of Health Sciences include a pair of simulated operating rooms, a diagnostic imaging suite equipped with CT, MRI and ultrasound scanners, and five high-fidelity simulation suites with manikins that can be programmed to present with various symptoms. We also have occupational therapy and physical therapy labs, a movement and motion analysis lab, and a biomedical sciences lab. Likewise, our Center for Interprofessional Healthcare Education (CIHE) programming is a wonderful way for students to collaborate across health-related disciplines.

Together, you will personalize your courses and discuss the different majors and opportunities within the School of Health Sciences.

The School of Health Sciences offers many opportunities to engage with the community through a variety of courses. These courses are designed to broaden students' understanding of the many careers in health sciences by observing and applying the concepts of interprofessional healthcare in community-based settings. These opportunities include students collaborating with local community partners to implement different service programs for specifically targeted populations. The implementation of these programs promote the development of critical thinking and assessment skills through observation, research and design that addresses future program sustainability.

You'll have plenty of opportunities to learn and explore outside the classroom, too. Last summer, many of our students participated in the Connecticut Public Health College Corps. The students spoke with their vaccination-hesitant peers about getting the COVID-19 vaccine. We also offer opportunities for individual and faculty-led research, internships and study abroad programs.

Alumni Spotlight

Alumna finds nourishing work

Yadley Turnier ’19 knew majoring in health science studies would lead to many career possibilities. Courses she took during her junior year on nutrition and preventable diseases steered her toward the field of public health.

After graduating, Turnier landed a position at FoodCorps, a national nonprofit that trains and places emerging leaders in limited-resource schools for a year of service. As a FoodCorps AmeriCorps service member at Green Village Initiative, Turnier teaches students from a range of socioeconomic backgrounds to grow and cook their food, steers them towards the healthiest food options and promotes a schoolwide culture that celebrates healthy food.

“If kids learn nutritional fundamentals early, they won’t be as prone later on to obesity and diet-related diseases like diabetes, cardiovascular disease and certain cancers,” Turnier said.

She teaches healthy eating habits, cooking, gardening and nutrition fundamentals to children in kindergarten through fifth grade at both the Read School and the Interdistrict Discovery Magnet School in Bridgeport, Connecticut. She also collaborates with the Thomas E. Carroll Nutrition Center to integrate local, farm-fresh foods into the schools’ breakfast, lunch and snack programs.

“If my students are getting two of their meals each day from school, then they should be the most beneficial meals possible,” Turnier said.

Turnier is motivated by the difference she has made. In 2020, she returned for a second year with FoodCorps and began a master’s degree in global public health.
